He was impressed by Mexico’s willingness to help many of his Polish compatriots fleeing the German occupiers. From his violin collection worth many millions he later gave away a Stradivarius and a Guarneri to Mexico and to Israel. During World War II Szeryng was a liaison officer and interpreter of the exiled Polish prime minister Sikorski who had found asylum in France. His career as a violin virtuoso began with studies with Flesch in Berlin and Boulanger in Paris and a performance of Beethoven’s Concerto op. 61 under Bruno Walter in Warsaw.
