It's said that "like their music, the name is equal parts Lewis Carroll, Grace Slick and Lowell George", a statement that leads you to believe The Love Junk Store will be profoundly imaginative and blood-stirringly earthy, with searing, pyrotechnic vocals invoking social and sexual revolution. You'd be wrong. At their most poppy and infectious, as with "Nothing On But The Radio" and the lilt of the opening "Ten Year Night", The Alice Band are a more deliberately sexy Corrs ("Later, on the kitchen floor", begins one line in "Ten Year Night"). But, being an international group, there's more than Gaelic voices here. "Now That You Love Me" is like an easy-going Alanis Morissette, while "Annie" and "Is This All?" are wordy tales of tortured teenage bafflement, recalling Tracy Bonham. Not so good is "January's Child", a sentimental glance at other people's misery that would have shamed even Jewel's debut album.
