Musica Antiqua K?ln had already officially disbanded in 2006, but the following year an unusual television production was realized by Arte and WDR as a kind of "follow-up": With J.S. Bach's "Art of the Fugue" in its luggage, the ensemble set out for Neuss, a former NATO base that is still home to the Langen Foundation. There, music and musicians were effectively staged in the extraordinary, modern architecture. Recorded in the light building of steel, glass and concrete designed by star architect Tadao Ando, Bach's timeless music interacts with a fascinating play of light and shadow by day and night. Changing instrumentation corresponds with varying settings and moods, giving each movement an individual visual character as well.The TV recording of this opus ultimum, which introduces the notes B-A-C-H in the last fugue and then suddenly breaks off, also marked the final end of this unique ensemble's work in 2007.
